Week in the Life of a Software Engineer

Week in the Life of a Software Engineer
Estimated Reading Time: 5 minutes

Hello there! I’m Zak, a recruiter here at InfoTrust. As a part of our series, “A Week in the Life,” where our recruiting team meets with various InfoTrusters to learn more about what a week in their role looks like, I was able to meet with a key member of our Discovery Team.

I was excited to sit down with Software Engineer Julian Quesada who joined our team this spring to learn more about his journey to InfoTrust and what his experience has been like thus far!

Q: How is InfoTrust different from other teams that you have been a part of in the past?

A: The cohesiveness of the team members is second to none. It feels really easy to get everyone on the same page and marching in the right direction. This helps a lot with identifying the best strategy when approaching work with our clients. I love that everyone is on the same page and not afraid to challenge ideas to make sure that we are heading in the right direction.

Q: Tell us a little bit about what led you to analytics engineering and where you are now?

A: Analytics was the last field that I thought I would end up in. I worked very closely with the marketing team in my previous role, and I quickly realized how much I enjoyed the analytics side of the role. I had done a little bit of work with Google Analytics in my previous position, and felt comfortable with the analytics ecosystem. I really felt like that background has allowed me to succeed in my current role. One of the things that I enjoy the most about my current role is the backend development. Building things to be functional is one of my favorite parts of development, and this role really allows me to challenge myself in that way daily.

Q: What did you enjoy the most about your onboarding experience at InfoTrust?

A: I felt like the onboarding experience was seamless. Getting introduced to everyone was very welcoming and by the end of my first day, I did not feel like a stranger. That being said, my first week was InfoTrust Week and I loved it! It was so inspiring to be able to see the Vivid Vision and strategy for the organization.

Q: What advice would you give to someone joining the Discovery Team?

A: Don’t feel the pressure to be utilized 100 percent when you first start. There is a lot of great introductory training to get everyone on the same page. The company prioritizes your success and ensures that you have the tools that you need to be successful.

Q: Why would someone want to join the Discovery Team?

A: Why wouldn’t you want to join the Discovery Team—that’s the more difficult question. There are a lot of great resources and even greater people that you have at your disposal to learn from and allow you to be successful in your role. I am surrounded by some of the smartest people that I have ever met—the value of that is indescribable.

Q: What is the most interesting project that you have taken part in at InfoTrust?

A: I am actually getting ready to take part in my first project in the next couple of weeks. I have had my hand in a few things at this point, but I am really looking forward to diving in deeper!

Q: What is the most rewarding part of your job?

A: There are a ton of things that are rewarding about my job, but if I had to just choose one it would be when I have intentionally built something that is generic enough that it can be reused by multiple people in multiple scenarios without any required modifications. The reason that I find this rewarding is because I set out with the intention of it being reusable, in addition to knowing that I can turn it around for one of our consultants in minutes depending on the project.

Q: How would you describe the balance between development and client-facing work?

A: Currently, the balance is approximately 100 percent development; it’s hard to say what work is client-facing right now. I currently partner with internal stakeholders who are more client-facing than me right now. I eventually plan on having more client-facing tasks and I am looking forward to taking that on!
