I’m currently doing a summer internship at InfoTrust in Cincinnati, Ohio. InfoTrust is a web analytics company developing multiple software-as-a-service (SaaS) technologies that are geared towards advertisers, digital marketers, web analysts and product vendors.

I’ve done two internships in the past during my doctoral studies. While the first was in Ireland in 2011, the last internship I had was with Teradata in California in 2013. I consider myself fortunate when it comes to my internship experiences. Each of them has offered a unique, interesting and challenging experience in terms of learning and professional growth.

Working here, I’ve been involved with working on some of the contemporary technologies including Amazon’s data warehouse solution – Amazon RedShift, developing automated tasks using Python scripting and data science projects. With my research area in the field of databases and my interest in experimenting with data science projects, I’m having quite a rich experience here.

Without getting into technicalities, I would like to summarize the pros of being an InfoTrustian. Wondering what are the cons? Let me tell you right away – there are none!

  1. Strong emphasis on learning: The teams here offer a dual learning-oriented work environment. You not only learn while working on real projects but the company also invests significantly to enhance its employees technical skills by encouraging participation in meetups, conferences and having dedicated training sessions. Not to forget – hackathons.
  2. Learning opportunities for interns and full-time employees alike: You are an intern in no way means that you will not get to work on equally exciting tasks as the full-time employees. You show interest, communicate with your manager on what you wish to work on and you get it.
  3. Open culture: I’ve observed occasions where someone came up with a project idea that was aligned with company’s goals, shared it with others in the team and higher management and today the team is working on developing that project solution.
  4. Autonomy and Flexibility: The culture here is such that the employees are offered lot of autonomy and flexibility in their work schedules and the employees in turn feel a sense of personal responsibility in delivering results effectively and efficiently. A win-win situation for the organization and employees.
  5. Who can forget free lunch and snacks all day: Last but not the least – can you believe this? You do not have to worry about preparing and packing lunch as you leave for work every day. Feel hungry again in the evening? Just walk to the kitchen!
