Using Social Media to Engage Consumers and Increase Web Traffic

I should be honest in saying that it took me some time to really appreciate Alltop.com. At first, I did not quite understand the point of having yet another website that has nothing but a list of blogs on a whole range of topics. Then, I started noticing Alltop badges on other blogs, and it did start to sink in. There is a clear advantage in knowing which blog ‘kicks ass.’

This blog post, however, is not a story about why I like Alltop. The blog post is about a message that I got from Guy on Twitter, after I posted an announcement indicating that I am trying out Alltop.

On his website, Guy has a section that is called Guy’s Golden Touch. On Twitter, Guy has a personal touch. As you can see, there is nothing special about the conversation, but for some reason I was extremely impressed with the attention. I honestly doubt that Guy Kawasaki sits and personally responds to messages on Twitter, but whoever is doing this is certainly doing it well.

Social media is not about making huge promises and shouldn’t only be about increasing web traffic in your web analytics reports. We all know of large corporations that say something among the lines of “Our Guarantee is That You Are Always Guaranteed to Have an Excellent Service,” and then they forget that you event exist. The new approach should be to show small indications of gratitude, it is about showing that you care, and that you appreciate somebody’s business.

I am confident that if I asked Guy Kawaski a question about Alltop via Twitter, I would receive an answer. The question can be raised if such attentiveness is a waste of time or if it can really drive sales or at least bring more people to the website. Last week, I was scheduled to speak at a local university, and teach two private classes.

In both classes I talked Alltop. I spent almost no time talking about the services Alltop provides, but I spent quite a bit of time talking about various customer service strategies, and I used this as an example. Several people actually asked me to give them the Alltop url, and I am confident that some will decide to check out the website. Regardless of what I think about the Alltop website, I am a fan simply because I was treated right. These days however, I do use My Alltop quite a bit.
